The original author’s hand-written poem which has been endorsed in pencil in the corner ñProof at once. Long primer.ñ This would be the copy sent to the printers for type setting before proof .Rosamund Marriott Watson (1860-1911) wrote under the pseudonym of ñGraham R. Tomsonî and in that name the manuscript is signed at the end. Among her many admirers was Thomas Hardy, on whom she made a lasting impression from a brief period of acquaintance. As Tomson, her poetry appeared in many periodicals including, importantly, The Yellow Book. Often labelled as a fin de siecle’ poet, her work has latterly begun to be reappraised as that of a pioneer modernist and there is further research to be done regarding her relations with Thomas Hardy in this respect. This particular poem was first published in ñThe Bird Bride: A Volume of Ballads and Sonnets by Graham R Tomsonî published by Longmans in 1889. It can therefore be presumed that this manuscript has been endorsed by Longmans.
