Product Description

An interesting document. John Wilkes (1727-1797), radical, politician was put forward for the Mayorality of London in 1773 , but this was rejected by the Aldermen who were thought to have been influenced in this decision by the attack on Wilkes by John Horne Tooke. However Wilkes’s popularity carried and he was duly elected in October 1774. This manuscript prepared for William Rix, Town Clerk for London, would have been given to Wilkes to read his Oath.
