John Ellis (1599?-1665), cleric and quasi-Puritan who published his “Defenseo Fudei” in 1660, this being the First English translation of a work which was a Defence of the Anglican position after the Restoration, as also a commentary on the Thirty Nine Articles. Born at Gwylan, Merioneth, he returned as rector of Dolgethy in 1645 where he supported the Puritan lords, the Committee for Plundered Ministers and the Westminster Assembly during the Civil War. He was also a supporter of a college for the training of Puritan Ministers. Wing E587
