Wood Street Compter. On the east side of Wood Street, stood this Prison pertaining to the Sheriffs of London, built in the Mayorality of Sir Samual Strange Knt. Sir John Smith, & James Edwards Esqr. being then Sheriffs 1670.

Wood Street Compter was a small prison within the City of London which was used primarily as a Debtor’s Prison, although some cases of drunkenness were also held there. In recent archaeological investigation at One Wood Street no trace of the prison was found.
